The tradition of the Bottle tree culture was brought to America by the African slaves who practiced it as a part of their exercise to ward off the evil spirit. Since then it has been adopted, in fact so much so that you will find plenty of them in the south today. It must be said of course that not all of the metal trees that you see around you might be in an attempt to catch hold of roving spirits; some of these structures have come up as a sheer decoration value and added charm to your manicured lawns.

The legend of the bottle tree goes that bottles were stuck up the bare branches of cedar trees in order to capture evil spirits. The evil spirits being lured by the play of light would be captured within these bottles and perish in the light of the day.

Today’s metal bottle tree of course draws inspiration from the original cedar bottle tree spirits, but has less to do with spirits and more with decoration. Indeed it has acquired status of an art form and you will find many a manicured lawn with this final touch of accessory trying to add that element of jazziness to the ambience.

In fact these days there are plenty of metal bottle tree manufacturers who will build a tree according to your specifications. The difference in the metal bottle tree as the name itself suggests is that the base instead of a real tree is made of metal with branches of metal too. Multi colored bottles or even only Cobalt blue ones (said to ward off evil spirits) are placed on the metallic branches.

Several original designs and variations have been added to the original ones at times to make the look and feel and exotic one! In fact you can now have carved glass pitchers or hand made colored glass bows to decorate your tree, the added benefit here being the metal base which needs no maintenance. In fact if you want to place it anywhere apart from the garden that would also be possible because these are usually portable and you might wish to decorate your interiors too.

In order to have a Metal bottle tree up your front yard you need not be a voodoo believer, or venture into capturing spirits too! The desire to have something unique with you is reason enough to place an order for the same or if you are enthusiastic enough and up to the arduous task build one yourself.

In fact the enthusiasm is catching up and you will find plenty such trees decorating many a garden in different and exotic variations. So if you are into metal work and can use some of your imagination to tackle a metal base and branches, start off on your first project of building a Metal bottle tree in your garden, who knows you might soon have orders pouring in!
